A reader recently wrote in about how the popular Dewalt DWS780 12″ sliding miter saw was pulled from Home Depot and Lowe’s websites. Amazon’s listing for the miter saw has also been taken down.

I suspect Dewalt is retiring their top of the line miter saw but I haven’t seen any announcements for a replacement.
I have not heard anything about a replacement model; as far as I am aware, the Dewalt DWS780 is still the brand’s flagship model.
UPDATE: There is a Stop Sale for Dewalt DWS780, DWS779, and DHS790 (FlexVolt) 12″ sliding miter saws, with the affecting models produced between March 2019 and April 2022. More details here.
I have not checked local stores, but can confirm Pete’s observation, that the miter saw is no longer available for purchase at Amazon, Home Depot, or Lowe’s.
Adding to the mystery, Norm wrote in today after having observed something similar about Dewalt’s DW735 and DW735X planer options. Amazon’s listings for these planers result in a “sorry we couldn’t find that page” error.
Independent online dealers still seem to have active inventory for both models.

These benchtop woodworking and construction tools continue to be popular, and Dewalt doesn’t usually pull tools from the market like this when replacements are announced or launched.
Looking deeper, the seasonal-favorite Dewalt DWS779 miter saw, which is a more affordable 12″ sliding miter saw, has also been pulled from Amazon and Home Depot’s websites, with “not found” type of error pages. Lowe’s product page is still up, but with a “this item is no longer sold on Lowe’s.com” alert.
Many other Dewalt miter saws do not seem to be affected by whatever is going on with these SKUs.
If I had to guess, I would suspect that parts shortages or greatly increased shipping fees are to blame, but why would that only affect these models?
Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s are major online retailers, and the DWS780, DW735, and DWS779 are extremely popular Dewalt tools. Something strange is going on.
We’ll check with Dewalt to see if they can share any insights, and will report back with any updates.

There has been mention on a Dewalt fans FB page that there’s a recall on the 779/780, with a screen-shot of an email about the recall date ranges.. but nothing specific as to what the issue actually is.

The DWS779 was updated last year to meet newer safety guidelines. (https://toolguyd.com/dewalt-dws779-sliding-miter-saw-updates-2021/) The DWS780 might have been updated as well.
I haven’t seen any news about a recall, and there’s no official recall notice that I can find.
Even so, entire product pages don’t typically disappear when there’s a recall. And, that also shouldn’t affect listings for the DW735 planer.
Product listings are typically maintained for their reviews, links to manuals, and “see new version/other products” links.

I haven’t been following anything about these saws or anything on social media but “recall” or “product update” of some sort was my guess too. Normally when Dewalt comes out with a new model the older models are substantially discounted for a while beforehand. I haven’t been looking carefully but I haven’t heard anything about major discounts on the 780 so I doubt that there’s some hot new model just about to come out.

The 779 was recalled due to an issue with the ‘rear blade guard’. Apparently it’s prone to cracking, which can cause a safety issue.
They sent a stop sale/recall notice to retailers with a very small overall image of what looks like some sort of bracket, without enough of the rest of the saw around it to give context so you’d know where to look for it.
The notice also specified date ranges, and mention of a ‘green dot’ on both the box and the unit itself. The green dot signifies that the saw has already been through the recall repair process and is safe to sell and use.
I don’t have the notice in front of me to include a pic of the date ranges or the absurdly vague picture they gave indicating the part in question. I had to ask a supervisor to send a message to Dewalt, asking for a better image, as we have several units that fall into the date range of the recall notice, but without a better idea of what we’re looking for, I can’t tell if those units have the defect.

Can’t comment on a rear blade gaurf but my dust deflector was shattered and exploded on like my 10th cut. Anything larger than a sliver that shoots out the back will bust it off. DeWalt sent me a free replacement deflector and it to broke. It’s not like that saw had any decent percentage of dust capture so no big deal with it missing. I made a zero clearance fence for 0 degree cuts and it helps

I had my 780 for 3 weeks and the light went out. Called Dewalt and the part was discontinued but, they have another part to replace which is not from the same company. I was a little disappointed because I called them 2 weeks ago and they want me to call them back 6/21 to see if they have the part? It was really odd.

I had a similar response from Channellock. I called about a problem with my 758 flush cutters. They said I should mail it in – but maybe not right now because 758 production was stopped while they caught up with a backlog of other plier styles and they had no inventory.
I’m not mad about that or anything. I’ve got a lot of Channellock and have warrantied something in the past where they couriered me a replacement a couple days later.
Nevertheless I mention it because it doesn’t seem THAT weird for a company not to have your part available.

Maybe its for the whole form factor?

I was down at Keim s customer appreciation event this past month and was talking to the DeWalt tool rep. He told me they are working on a single Flex Volt (60v) battery version of 120v (60v X 2) compound miter saw. He wasn’t able to give me an ETA on the new version.

They have one in Europe, but never released it in the USA. I haven’t heard anything about a new single battery FlexVolt miter saw yet, and I wonder if it will be any different from the EU model.

It is a recall. I just called an Ace that carries the full line of Milwaukee essentially in store, not your typical Ace lets say, often having Milwaukee reps there at events. They were negative in quantity because they sent them back for a recall. The employee I spoke with wasn’t aware of it, but the manager knew immediately

I wouldn’t be that surprised if there is A) minor shortage in materials or issues with some of the item that led to B) a new product design to help supplier/parts issues and also a timely refresh of their main product family that fixes C) the new product won’t look like the HF hercules item.
I hope part of that is right. If it was cheaper too that would help but I know that won’t be.

I… Don’t want to speculate here, but… I’m just going to throw one theory into the mix… DeWALT is preparing to emphasize the Cordless line, to test the viability of the 120V platform for use on high-draw tools, such as the Miter Saws and Planers? Wishful thinking on my part here, but… Maybe this will lead to a FlexVOLT Standing Bandsaw? And… If that does go wonky on them… y’know… Backfires on the sales?… The next versions of the 780 and 735/X will be released back into the wild? Fresh materials, new runs of production, and sporting a type number one higher than the ones we currently are talking about…

I got a response today from DeWalt to my question as to why the DWS780 is not longer sold on Amazon, HD and Lowes and it’s discontinued in the near future.
In their response they don’t address if the saw is retired or a new model is coming out but focused on experiencing a manufacturing defect with the rear guard breaking in a small number of saws manufactured from 4/2019 to 3/2022. No official recall has been issued for the defect. The issue affects the DWS780 DWS779 and DHS790 and can occur when the blade throws a piece of wood on the guard.
In my opinion, this is really a small defect for HD and Lowes to stop selling the DWS780.
Something else must be going on but I don’t want to start speculating on a very good product that has served well a good number of professionals.

We got an actual ‘stop sale’ notice where I work. We were directed to remove all stock from the sales floor until each unit could be verified having the defect or not.
That could be the case with THD and Lowes as well. We’re a smaller retailer, but I imagine everyone got the same notice. It also stated that it was a voluntary recall, but that Dewalt was working with CPSC to resolve the issue.

I tried to purchase a 780 last week. My commercial rep had it pulled and was waiting on me to come get it. He called me before I could get to the store and told me he could not sell it to me due to a safety issue. I then headed to my local Northern Tool store. NT did not have any on the shelf but I found them stacked up on a cart in the storage room. They had a “do not sell due to a safety issue” note hanging on them.
I really want the battery powered 790 but have not found one of those for the last year or more.
The only reference I found to any recall was in a Facebook search. A Canadian site had a safety recall referenced. Really would like to replace my old 708 before it leaves me stranded but I guess I will have to look for a different option.

Definitely some kind of design and/or manufacturing problem. I’m guessing they are negotiating with the CPSC as to a potential fix. This is what comes from focus only on financials and not on product and End Users.

Should be okay – check for the inspection markers as described in the post.
Dewalt issued a stop sale 2 months ago, and recalled affected products from retailers. Currently-sold inventory should not be affected by the recall, but you can and should check upon receiving it.

I have a dws780 dewalt saw which needs a replacement blade guard assembly. Called dewalt to order and they tell me the part is no longer available. Total BS. The saw which is a few years old with very little use is unsafe to operate without the blade guard functioning safely. A lot of money for what I thought would be a quality product. Buy any other brand as dewalt can’t make a quality product.
