Gerber Bear Grylls Basic Survival Kit – a Decent Buy

Gerber Bear Grylls Basic Survival KitBack in February, Gerber announced a new line of Bear Grylls-branded gear. After comparing some of the “new” offerings with Gerber’s existing lineup, I pretty much dismissed the entire lineup. However, taking another look at the lineup, there are a few good buys, such as the basic survival kit.

The Gerber Bear Grylls basic survival kit includes a partially serrated Paraframe mini knife (~$11 via Amazon), an emergency whistle, waterproof carry pouch, fire starter with striker, waterproof matches, snare wire, and cotton ball fire tinder. For less than $20, that’s a pretty darn good deal.

Normally this is the type of kit I would prefer to put together piecemeal, but that would likely be near impossible for me to do for less than $25, excluding shipping.

I think that the striker and knife alone are likely worth the cost as I’ve seen a comparable striker for about $5-9 in most stores. Of course this model of fire starter looks a lot like a re-branded Brunton model fire starter with striker (http://www.amazon.com/Brunton-Striker-Starter-Silver-Black/dp/B0018BCYOA/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1309952887&sr=8-7) which sells for $12 on Amazon.

Thanks! Personally I think it comes from seeing if certain electronics are re-brands (you’d be surprised how many are) or if certain cars are based upon the chassis of another company’s cars (a lot of cars are based on the Lotus Elise body).

I do think some of bears products are way toooooooo $$$$$$ high in price considering these items can be put together from home though.
