Harbor Freight Icon G2 30-inch Rolling Tool Cabinet

Harbor Freight showed off new Icon G2 rolling tool cabinets at SEMA 2025, featuring a 30″ depth and updated drawer latches.

From other coverage I’ve seen, the new Icon G2 tool cabinet features a large power tool drawer, and also the option to go with industrial-style divider rails.

HF says that the Icon G2 products are still in development, and that they brought out the 72″ x 30″ roller cab to SEMA for feedback.

They also showed off lots of US General tool storage products in purple – roller cabinets, a top chest, top hutch, and side lockers.

I bought a couple of Harbor Freight US General tool cabinets. While I can tell they were built to a price point, they’ve been holding up well and deliver a lot of value for the money.

It’s great to see HF moving forward with more innovations and more colors. A lot of other brands seem to have given up on the steel storage space, delivering tired old designs. While this is just an expansion of purple color options, every further available choice is welcome.

Harbor Freight gave no indication of when any of this will be available.

Here’s a quick video tour:

Excited for the G2 version of the roller cabinet. I’d love to see some Icon hanging wall cabinets! One can only hope.

Does metal storage have weather/water resistant rating? Beside the Job Box type, any metal chest can be left outside? At least keep things dry? Back to Job Box type, I not sure why it is not more popular with home owners, I’ll take them over those little sheds any day.

No, not at reasonable or consumer price points.

Interesting suggestion you’ve made. I’m wondering if has more to with old habits or potentially a lack of concrete to park a roller cabinet on?
Given I’m in the Pacific Northwest I’d never permanently put “metal” storage outdoors.
I know. I know. But cars and rigs don’t have as many options.

Job boxes are pretty ugly as a rule, even compared to the cheap plastic garden sheds. On a jobsite people couldn’t care less about the aesthetics of a Knaack box.

They’re also just not built to serve as garden sheds. Getting one long enough for rakes and shovels costs an arm and a leg, and you still have to store them all on-top of each other rather than standing/hanging up.

I have used smaller contico truck boxes as deck storage for stuff that needs to be kept very dry.

The closest to a sealed weather-rated tool storage system is going to be DeWalt’s toughsystem 2.0 dxl, which I believe Stuart has already mentioned previously is on closeout in a lot of places, and for good reason, it tends to fit a really narrow use case that fall outside most uses.

Otherwise there are “triangle tool boxes” like that from montezuma that are rated and gasketed for being outdoors, with the intention to be used in field equipment service, where the box is mounted onto a service truck flat bed or similar. They have their own positives and negatives for space and tool capacity, but in my opinion, tend to be highly job specific.

It’s generally not for carrying one of each tool for “just in case” as many tool boxes tend to have(so no, it means you can’t carry every size of 1/8-1″ and 2mm-30mm sockets in 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ drive) but are designed to carry 110-130% the bare minimum tools required for the expected type of service. Most aren’t even designed to fit a full set of SAE wrenches from 7/16″-1″.

      https://www.montezumastorage.com/collections/triangle-toolboxes-and-shopboxes

Overall, tool storage tends to be maintained within other enclosures due in large part to the expense that they hold. A full complement of sockets and wrenches aren’t cheap– even among the cheapest sets.

to leave that easily accessible to the elements also tends to mean that it’s just as easily accessible to thieves as well. So in most cases, the preference is to hide the tool drawers behind thicker or more obfuscated weather rated doors to prevent weather entry, but also make illicit access less easy.

    Stuart,
When you say “industrial-style divider rails” are you describing the dividers that are used in a Vidmar/lista type cabinet?

Those type dividers are what would send me to the Tekton boxes if I ever had to replace my SnapOn box.

I would love to have HF eventually offer this feature in their smaller size boxes.
    Even at extra cost.

Yes; perhaps not identical but definitely at least inspired by it. The Den of Tools video shows it off at around the 10:14 mark.

I have yet to divide up the test sample that Tekton sent me, mostly because the drawer layout keeps changing. It’s still fantastic, and I would buy other Rousseau products without hesitation, I just wish they were easier to order.

If their tool carts weren’t so short-lived, I’d have purchased some by now. https://toolguyd.com/tekton-tool-carts/

Absolutely an ICON full bank service cart would be awesome. Also Harbor freight needs to keep expanding the ICON brand.

That drawer pull style is the same as snapon’s epic tool box line. And they are also 30″ deep. But those boxes around 72″ generally run at least $15-20k minimum at oddball color blowout pricing, and only for the stand alone bottom box before adding any sort of top surface to it…

I’m going to have to see how they are on pricing once it’s announced, but I’m seriously interested, though highly doubtful they’ll be under $5k for a 72″.

Realistically, and not knowing all of the build features like metal thickness or paint quality, I’m calling the box to be in the $8k ballpark range.

Which if I’m right, means I’m still fully sold on getting a Styrke tool box instead, despite the Canadian tariff situation.

Curious how you arrived at your projected price. Albeit 5″ narrower the gen1 73″ cab is at 2995, stainless bench top 299, top chest 1799, hutch 999, end locker 1399 or cab 899, etc. Everyday retail prices. Well under 8k gets you 3 floor to ceiling options, 2 options of extra width, and an insane assortment of external mount holders and organizers.

New gen us general stuff always comes in with cosmetic, durability and functional upgrades, and significant cross compatibility for 20-25% ish retail price increase.

Id betcha a beer the 2nd gen cabinet debuts at no more than 4999, and id go double or nothing it’s drops between 3999-4299. Heck let’s do a parlay/trifecta.. anything under 3599 you have to find me in/around SW MO and buy the first 2 cold ones… anything over 7499 I come to you to cover 1st couple rounds.. host covers generous gratuity….

This is starting to feel like my favorite version of a Superbowl bet…. Wanna shake on it?? Haha

it’s entirely speculation on my part, as there hasn’t be any specifications even whispered to compare to the snapon equivalent. my assumption is that they’re going to need to use a similar slide for weight rating, as well as a similar metal thickness, which represents a significant hard cost irregardless of the brands logo on it.

the reddit threads are mostly agreeing on a just-as-random $1,000 increase over the current icon pricing–which makes my guestimate pretty far out of line.

my guestimate is entirely speculative based on what the market will bear. keep in mind that snapon’s iteration of this same box size and latch style being the epiq line, is usually around $10k-15k, and that’s what i’ve had the trucks price out in their random overstock boxes in the 60-84″ boxes that they’re willing/desperate to offload, many of some really garish finishes. custom ordering means full price, which is a minimum $13.9k for their smallest 60″ epiq box, and $19k for their 84″ boxes taken right off their website.

granted, there’s a lot of wiggle room in hf’s setup, from more standardized finishes, to drawer slide weight capacity, to overall metal thickness used in the construction.

but my assumption is that they’re chasing snapon quality, and metal costs aren’t falling. HF has the brick and mortar overhead, but not the tool truck and financing overhead of snapon.

so that was how i arrived at an assumption that for them to get snapon quality, they’d need to be somewhere around 2/3-1/2 price of the snapon equivalent.

According to the reddit thread on these, at least one video indicated a late 2026 release for these

    https://www.reddit.com/r/harborfreight/comments/1ooia1o/comment/nn5galj/

That tends to track on timeline with other harbor freight releases

the spokesperson (Brian) is specifically saying this is at least 1-1.5 years out from official release. and that time frame might even be generous.
