My local Home Depot store has been selling giant Husky 170 gallon tote boxes for around 6 weeks now, and my back hurts just looking at it.
You know the 27 gallon storage boxes that fit a ton of stuff and can be heavy to move when fully loaded? This box is more than 6 times bigger.
It’s got an extending handle and a pair of wheels.

What can this even be used for?!

Oh, okay – Home Depot says this can be used to store their 12 foot Skelly Halloween decoration, or at least most of it.
It’s not a giant storage box, but a storage box for giant skeletons.
Home Depot says the Husky 170 gallon storage tote box has 8 grab points and 4 corner lifts.
This seems like a very application-specific storage box. Maybe it can also be used to store other light stuff, such as fluffy cushions.
My local store didn’t mention the Halloween decoration aspect all, they just had signage announcing the season’s “mega storage event.”

First they convince you to buy a 12-foot skeleton so that you’re not the only house on the block without one, and then you have to get a massive 170 gallon storage tote to store it in for the other 11 months of the year.
Price: $99

It won’t fit through a man door or a slider even. I looked at it in the store and was still shocked how big it is. I think qt for qt the yellow tops for $10 is a better deal
Mike
The pictures at the link show two people turning it on its side to go through a doorway. It’s doable because it has grab handles in odd places and it’s 27″ high. However, that’s not making very good use of the dinky wheels on the bottom, and if you fill it to its 200lb capacity, that better be two hefty boys grabbing those handles.

I thought about these for my skeletons, which are just hanging in my garage. or even out door decorations (ive got a lot of inflatables). i dont know where i would put it though.
Clipperqb
I filled it with water and ran my 300 HP outboard in it.

Lol did you really? At first I thought you were joking but then I thought maybe you had the motor on a testing stand.
Alexk
I hope it has air holes ‘cause I’d be playing hide and seek in it. It does seem good for holiday decorations, if you have a garage to store it.
Branden
It’s the perfect size for our RV cover that’s a massive amount of fabric and straps and can’t divide into multiple totes.
Katie
It’s for garage storage only. My son had a snowblade kit for a riding mower that was stored in the cardboard box it came in. But the box got too worn, and so he tried the largest yellow lidded tote and everything fit except for one longer part. This box could store stuff like that longer part, plus some of the other riding mower accessories that are still stored in cardboard boxes but are longer than the largest yellow lidded container. Large accessories for things like that. But $99 seems a lot for a bulky plastic thing. Especially since the yellow lidded boxes are much better priced.

I could maybe see this for like, sail storage if you have a boat but no place to roll them? My wife has a couple of the 50-gallon rolling bins for horse blankets and tack and those are already pushing the limits of practicality. >3x larger than that is hard to comprehend.
Mike S
I would not trust a sail in there. One mouse nest and your folded sail will have about 20 holes in it. Ask me how I know, lol.
Jim Felt
I found this to be all too true while acting as the PR for a late friend’s estate. High end O scale locomotives and rolling stock. Not a pretty sight.

Seems like it could be used similarly to a deck box. But those are traditionally meant to stay outside and are often made to sit on. And this one is more intended to be moved. I’m guessing that for people who own a sailboat, or large RV to cover, they will also have a multi-stall garage or other building that this will fit in.
Rob H
People are using them for cargo boxes on the harbor freight 4×4 trailer. It seems to be a good fit for that.
Rog
I have seen used as makeshift pools for kids
Bonnie
Huh, makes sense. Cheaper than a stock tank at that size, though I’d be surprised if they hold up more than a season or two.
Rog
The kids have to be little. I suspect it’s a “if we get a summer of memories and peace out of it, it’s $100 well spent” sorta thing
Jsb
Deck box that can be moved to garage when hurricane evac is required.

They have been in my local Home Depots for a couple of months now. I expect to see them on clearance because I don’t think the stack has gone down since they appeared.
Jason
I’ve seen this a few times on recent trips and wondered the same. I have a Maverick pickup and wondered about how waterproof it is. For a road trip I could have the kids pack and play, stroller, all our bags, etc.
Roll that huge thing right onto the hotel elevator (maybe) and get it to the hotel room without juggling 3 trips with a luggage cart. “The European mind cannot comprehend”

Might make a good bin for storing PVC fittings and pipe stubs if you have a lot of them…
Matt_T
The $10 yellow lid ones work well for that. I use one for1-1/2″ and 2″ then one each for 3″ and 4″ DWV. Large enough to hold pretty much anything you’ll need and small enough to throw in the van.

I was thinking bulky camping gear like tents, backpacks, or sleeping bags. Storing sleeping bags is always a struggle since you don’t want to store them compressed and they are large!
I will have to check these out in the store to see how truly large they are!
Scott K
I keep ours in stuff sacks in a bin (which I know isn’t ideal). I just saw a video where someone had them stored on a moveable coat rack – looked like a good solution if you have the space and right environment.

Camping gear is what has me considering these boxes as well.
Jared
Me too! Big storage bins are pretty handy for camping – at least how I do it. A single really big one could actually be useful for sleeping bags, cots, maybe a tent – how big is this thing exactly?
How it’s being described, it seems kind of expensive – if it’s not really that robust. Nevertheless, a big bin has uses – just not the multi-purpose ones of a regular storage bin.
Bonnie
It’s four feet wide. This is a *hefty* crate.
isosceles
Jw, what’s wrong with compressing a sleeping bag?
PW
Over time they stay more compressed and lose some of their insulation value. (Insulation works by creating tiny air bubbles to thermally isolate you, and compressing a sleeping bag removes them.)

Perfect for a dead body
Chris tha Contractor
I’ve seen them you could fit 3
zchris87v
Considering people refer to my 1960’s land yacht’s trunk as a “3 body trunk”, I wonder if it would fit in there?
Bill
I was going to buy a few to store my skeletons, but my therapist says they aren’t big enough. 🙂
Dina
Now that’s funny! I’ll wait ’til they go on clearance to get a few of those bad boys!
Scott K
These are huge! I saw a big stack in my local HD a few months ago. I didn’t try to handle one, but I imagine it would be unusable without the wheels and handle. I guess if you have bulky but light items that need to be stored in a moveable bin this could work. We cover our outdoor furniture and leave it outside, I guess this could work if we wanted to drag the cushions into our garage, though this would take up a lot of space. The size of these makes where they can go pretty limited.

I work at Home Depot and I heard that people have bought these to put snakes in. Seriously.
Bonnie
Clear plastic tubs make great terrariums and vivariums, especially for larger sizes. A glass or acrylic tank this size would be well over two grand before any equipment or stand. So I can definitely see it.
Chuck Cole
Redneck Hot Tub!

I wanted to hate on this but I went to the product page on HD’s website…it interesting, I’ll say that much. Dimensions are about 48″x40″x27″deep, so if you tilt on it’s side it’ll go through a 28″ or wider doorway. I have to say it’s pretty well designed with grab “handles” (notches) and such. $99 is too steep for me, but if they were on sale in the $70 range I’d consider a few for bulky, lightweight attic storage. I could also see for lifejackets or anything similar where you need the capacity of a deck box but might need to move more frequently.
Mopar4wd
I saw a thread on facebook with these. #1 use seemed to be storing decorations in the garage, which makes sense. Next was people using them like a deck box you can roll inside. Everyone I saw that actually used them was rolling them into a garage or a shed with a double door etc. So I think that’s the use case never picking them up. I do like the person on Home Depots website review that made one in to a koi pond.
Saulac
Roughly the size of the bins that farmers use to keep apples and vegetables. Looks stackable but at that size who would be able to lift? And if you can’t stack then it’s just wasting too much space.
Katie
If you got three of the 57 gallon storage boxes with the yellow lids, at $35, you’d spend approx the same amount for the same approx storage. That seems like a more manageable system, depending on what you want to store except for very large things. Though $99 seemed like a lot for a big plastic thing, With a box that big it would have to be big things, because if it’s Holiday decorations, I would rather have them sorted into smaller categories.
Joel
40 x 48 is, among other things, pallet-sized. So put it on a pallet and rack it with the forklift that we all have in our garages LOL.
John
Oh man can you imagine the organizational possibilities, instead of a garage having a 100,000 sq ft warehouse?
ElectroAtletico
Perfect tub for washing my dogs.
Ben
I could see this being used to store those inflatable hot tubs that aren’t rated for winter. We have had a couple and need to keep the squirrels out of them in the shed during winter.
Adam
First problem is getting it home. Have to have a pickup or trailer.
Cheap kids pool, or maybe a cold plunge
SamR
It will be great for motor parts, engines, axles, suspensions, etc.
Tim
When I first saw it in the store I thought it was a joke but then I pictured myself turning it into a hot tube.
