Leatherman has launched a new one-piece multi-tool, the OPNR.
The Leatherman OPNR is a keychain-sized tool with 4-functions:
- Package opener
- Bottle opener
- Pry bar/screwdriver
- Keychain or lanyard hole

The OPNR is just 2.6″ long, 1.01″ wide, and 0.09″ thick. It’s made from 420HC stainless steel and has a plain metal finish.

Leatherman priced the OPNR tool at just $10.
It looks like shipping (for 1) is $5.95, or free on orders over $125.

“Complete the look” with a Leatherman carabiner accessory clip, which is also priced at $10.

Hey sir, I think it is the “opnr” the acronyms in the article switch back and forth a few times.

Oops! I felt so proud of myself that I got the image titles right, definitely jinxed myself. Thanks – *fixed*!

That package opener corner point looks like it could dig or cut into your thigh if on a keychain in your pocket. I wonder how sharp the edge is. I know I trigger car alarms once in a blue swearing moon when I squat or bend over.
Stuart
It doesn’t look any sharper than the average house key.
Robert
Yeah, when I go back and look at the third picture on the Letterman site I see that. Other pictures leave it more in question.

I’ve never seen a bottle opener running lengthwise like that. I wonder how well it works. You would have less leverage, clearly. OTOH, I don’t need to carry around a bottle opener anyway.
I’m curious about how these little things are made. CNC laser? They could stamp it out with dies, but I understand the dies are pretty expensive to make?

You won’t be able to get a chamfer shown with just stamping or a laser. My guess is laser for the profile and then a secondary machining op for the chamfers. Or just CNC mill the whole thing.
MM
Agreed. The chamfer is definitely milled, if you look at the higher resolution pics on leatherman’s site you can see the tooling marks. The logo looks lasered. I bet your theory is correct, they probably cut them out of sheet with a laser–which also cut the logos at the same time–and then they got moved to a mill for the chamfer. If we could see the outside edge it would be easier to tell, but from what photos we do have the outside edge is not all that clean so I think it probably was lasered.

I saw this in an email from Leatherman and I’m intrigued. It’s really simple and clean looking. I like that they don’t try to pretend like it has 12 functions. $10 seems reasonable compared to similar keychain tools. This could be a good alternative to a multitool. I love my Micra, but sometimes I reach for my other car keys if I don’t want the bulk.

Personally I think I would prefer their long out of production Brewzer.
This new one and the Brewzer both have the same abilities, so why the change. Could it be that Leatherman is slowly bringing back their pocket tools which would make sense since they purchased PocketToolsX back in 2012, if I recall correctly. Then they slowly got rid of them all which I was sad to see. There were some of us who really liked the varied flat pocket tool line, hopefully it will come back again.
