The first pict inspires the question of what is the oldest tool that tool Milwaukee still make, probably with only minor changes but still same model number?

    I have a question:
Will we ever get a more detailed explanation of the new motor technology that Milwaukee announced and that you were incredibly excited about last year? There was a lot of hype, and then crickets.

Now it’s Pipeline 2025, and still nothing. As much as I hate the phrase, that was supposed to be a ‘game changer’. But the lack of information speaks volumes. What’s going on??

I haven’t yet found the person I need to ask if/where it’s also been implemented.

Meanwhile, there’s also brand new motor tech in the M12 ratchets, and lots of promise there too.

I’ll be here and asking more questions until they turn the lights off.

There is one new tool with the segmented motor, and it’s the One-Key version of last year’s circular saw.

I didn’t find the people I connected with, but I did get some insights during dinner.

I can’t share with you the off the record stuff, but I was told that more tools utilizing that are on the way, and of the type where high power in a smaller size is a top priority.

Today I saw outer rotor motors for the first time, and those are wild.

Some of the tech I saw last year was implemented in some of the new tools we saw today – I don’t recall which, but hope my mic recordings picked it up.

I ran out of time and will be requesting some interview time.

“Outer rotor motor.” The product manager obliged when I asked them to say that 5 times fast. =)

Super curious about the longer term MX vision. Will we ever see a baby fork lift? Dingo style mini skid-steer? Ride on mower / lawn tractor?

I don’t know about that, but I’m sure we’ll see even more. I think that ride-on gear might be too demanding for even MX Fuel battery sizes.

If there’s enough demand, they’ll figure things out.

      I’ll need to unpack everything.

I missed the knee pads but learned a lot about the Surge and also the pliers wrench – I spent a lot of time checking those out.

New Surge is so much quicker! I over-drove lag screws the same, but the new model had vastly improved application speeds. They also did some neat things to improve the internals.

Thank you, I appreciate it! It was an intense day, but it was like being at Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

The new nibbler looks OK. We used a corded machine from Kett that could cut up 10ga, basement oil tanks – but cleanup (all those little discs) was always more work than the actual cutting.
HD says it’s on special buy:

In regards to what we might like to see in the future of Packout, I have some thoughts…
Something that I’ve been noticing for a few years is how fast the clear tops of the organizers, turn yellow. And sometimes you can even see all the micro cracking, in the plastic, from sun damage. These fantastic boxes, with their great gaskets, are made to be used outside. And it doesn’t take long, and the lids aren’t transparent anymore, and the product stops having that, “ I was willing to pay a premium price for a premium product” look to it.

I would love to see the organizers optioned with black lids. I’d have some now already. Their size is perfect for dedicated tool kits and things like that. And maybe for those that truly need to see what’s inside, Milwaukee could come out with a version II of the lids, that incorporates better UV protection.
Or a sturdy black frame and then higher quality clear windows.

Maybe I’m an outlier on this idea. But if Acme Tools had the organizers in stock, with black lids, I’d be carrying a couple up to the check-out till.

Add scratches on clear lids and cracks from impact/falls/hits and they can look old before their time. Replaceable lids may be the best opportunity, but if it can be replaced then a risk of falling off would be present.
But for the people spending company money they can just replace the entire unit. Planned obsolescence is planned well in advance.

Interesting. But from the perspective of a guy who owned shares in several companies and took on the management role of monitoring expenses – there is no free lunch. We tried to do cost benefit analyses around nearly every purchasing decision – and try to extend the life of our tool inventories and mobile equipment to the extent practical. While we did not drive broken-down trucks or use damaged tools – we were happy when our capital equipment and tool inventories were still in productive use after they had been fully amortized. Of course, inventory “shrinkage” sometimes intervened. Our business philosophy was that we bought all of the tools needed to do the work we expected of our employees. We’d sometimes needed to buy specialized items for jobs where we judged it was better to buy rather than rent or lease. But for most new tools that we’d see hit the market – we would buy sparingly – pass them around and evaluate to see if they fit with our style of working, improved productivity, enhanced safety etc. If the consensus was that they would make a real difference – then we’d phase them in.

In regard to packout, a $30-50 box (clear lid) holding $10 to $100s of items wouldn’t be considered a disposable if it risked tool or material loss? A cloudy or yellow lid isn’t an immediate replacement, but risk of that loss accelerates replacement schedule. Any item costing less than an hour of pay to my farm is an easy change out if it will cost time especially could risk down time in planting/harvesting rush times where $1000s an hour can be lost. They’re plastic boxes so they qualify to me as an intermediate term disposable.

I appreciated your comment on $1000s per hour that can be lost. And I know I’m dragging the conversation further away from the Milwaukee headline.
But on well regarded tool forums like this, people often talk about people who “actually use their tools”. Like a tech that is assigned a bay at a Ford, or Caterpillar dealership. And people talk about the importance of tool replacement in case of a warranty situation. But sometimes I’m at a location that requires taking a gravel road to its end, then taking the prairie trail to its end, and then driving further. In case of an unscheduled breakdown, I’m going to be “actually using” my tools. If something breaks, the last thing on my mind is the warranty. The costs of the situation have already surpassed far above any broken hand tool warranty scenario. Sometimes there is a lesson to be learned. But it’s never something like “ I should have splurged on Snap-On. I could warranty this out”. And sometimes the lesson learned is a surprise. Like “wow, this off-brand builds one hell of a 3/4 drive socket set!”

Stuart, I know this wasn’t the direction you wanted this to go. But these comment sections are a great place for people to share ideas. And I’ve just always had these thoughts in the back of my mind over the years. So I thought I’d share my perspective.

This is something I can ask about once things settle down.

We talked about my affinity for the rolling cart and drawers, and I mentioned that I had a much easier time installing the casters with recently purchased units than earlier ones.

It turns out that they made a minor rolling change to tweak things.

None of my Packout organizer lids have yellowed, but I also don’t leave them in the sun a lot.

It’s not a good idea to leave these in direct sun – the contents can get very hot.

@Farmerguy, I’d say that scratches on a clear lid from impacts, falls, hits, is to be expected. Scratches is better than deformation from being too soft or brittle cracking from being too hard.

On top of what was announced a few weeks back, has anything new been announced for today?
I am more interested in the 36v tools and MX fuel line up. Any mention of ‘the pressure washer’ or 15ah batteries

I’d love better comparison with the previous tool, when something like a Gen2 surge comes along. The new marketing mostly compares to competition / non-surge. But I want to know if it is worth it to upgrade.

New SURGE is noticeably faster. I believe my colleague recorded a side by side demo, and I tested them one by one to gauge the feel.

Whether it’s a tough one or not is a difficult question. Since you already have the Gen 1, I’d say this one’s a firm “maybe.”

Very excited about the Gen. 2 Surge. I’ve been rocking my gen. 1 for 7 years now, and I’ve made many many converts along the way. Most people in my shop have one because of me.

I guess I’ll have to go buy the EGO snowblower

Disappointed there isn’t more carpentry and woodworking tools. It would have been nice to see updated miter saws & table saws to go with the new VACLINK vacuums. How about a biscuit joiner, 21 gauge brad nailer, m12 router, power washer? As far as packout, we need a work table that integrates with the system. Oh well, maybe next year…

MORE VacLink tools are coming. More PACKOUT is on the way. I ran out of time and couldn’t get too much in the way of official hints. The tradeoff is that I asked more questions about USA-made tools.

I want the precision blower, but I noticed it’s not a fuel tool. I know there will be an update I want more. I don’t see the mx backpack blower. Maybe it’s already released? Too much money to barely compare to the largest gas ones like I had

Thanks. I’ve mentioned it a couple times on these Pipeline posts, hoping “next year” will be the year.

It seems like an easy thing and would make a roadside recovery kit so much more complete. I have an inflator and impact wrench, why not a jack as well? Not to mention using one to adjust things that are too heavy to easily move.

I tried skimming through just now, will watch tomorrow.

I missed them and a few others at the show, and unfortunately didn’t make it to say hi to everyone during meal times either.

I always feel rude at these events. I ran out of time, which is typical. When I’m focused on something I *must* test or ask about, I’m either completely oblivious to everything around me, or can’t stop to chat.

I didn’t have much time to check them out. Which MX tools are you most interested in?

With MX equipment, I tend to lack prior experience with many, and so it’s not as critical for me to get hands-on time at Pipeline. I can ask for an interview once the dust settles.

I do have the new backpack blower for testing.

Kinda disappointing that Milwaukee hasn’t released a compact m18 Forge battery yet. The last compact m18 battery they came out with was the 3.0 high output and that was 6 years ago.

Lack of a new 3/4″ impact is also perplexing. I’m assuming they’re building an entirely new gun (similar to what DeWalt did with the 961/964) since they haven’t just put a 3/4″ anvil in the 2967 and called it a day.

Pre-ordered the new sub compacts M12 impacts and will get the new ratchets definitely.

Disappointed? Nobody needs a low profile forge….what would be the point. There’s already a 3ah hight output and its a 3rd of the price of an equivalent forge.

I would love to see a 4ah forge. I want a lightweight powerful battery for my impacts, drills, & nailers that can also be used on a saw in a pinch. The 3ah high output bothers me because it’s the exact same size as a 4ah would be.

DeWalt 1.7 Power stack is one of my favorite batteries of all time. Wouldn’t mind seeing a M18 baby battery as well as a 4ah

4Ah 21700 packs are good compactish general purpose batteries so I can see why you’re disappointed. Took a look and the compact to normal sized M18 battery line-up looks really dated and overcrowded.

Whether the 4Ah pack should be Forge is debatable. If it required a significant cost, or size for cooling, increase it might be better to build a conventional pack.

Regards the impact the lights in the nose might not leave enough room for 3/4″ drive?? If it was an easy change it’d be a no brainer to offer it. Even the 10 year old high torque guns will tear up anvils in hard use.

As a framer, I’ve been waiting and waiting for a cordless sheathing stapler. I don’t even care what color the battery is. It doesn’t have to staple blazingly fast like an air stapler. But something that fires N17 staples would be awesome.

That’s a little disappointing. I was hoping for a refresh on their miter saw. I’ve heard it’s good but not great. I’ve held off on buying any miter saw for a number of years but there’s plenty of times it would be convenient. Maybe next year is my year?

Also disappointing that gen 2 of the surge is only out for M18 and not M12. That’s my favorite tool right there. Even if they just updated it with three leds like the regular impact that would be an improvement.

    Packout request/hopes…..
Was hoping for a packout case that had charging and storage for a couple of batteries. Dewalt has one in Tough series.
Also an instant buy for me would be a half height version of the compact tool box.
Also as others mentioned earlier something other than the clear dimpled lids for the organizers, especially the half width organizers

In general (for all the box builders), better internal fittings to organize content. Milwaukee has made some steps in that direction with the bit cases, the sawzall blade inserts and in EU the plumbers and electrians inserts. I realize that the are lots of 3rd party 3d printed offerings, but that very quickly gets very expensive. There was a post about Tamija (spelling?) about a year ago and they had some interesting ideas.

      Tajima system: https://toolguyd.com/tajima-tool-box-belt-system/

There was no talk of enclosed charging solutions. It’s a challenging category due to heat generation.

Regarding Packout inserts, they have some, mainly for select tool sets and assortments that are already offered with a Packout storage option. Other than that, I don’t think the interest is strong enough to justify molded production runs.

3D printing (whether DIY or purchased) is a great way to get customized solutions, and while expensive I don’t think that it’d be any better for molded accessories. I’d say the same for any tool box system, not just Packout.

It’s a little larger than competing models, but felt well-balanced, and I’m excited about the built-in dust separator that prolongs filter efficiency.

I think some people might not like the size, but it’s still a one-handed vac that doesn’t seem to have any other tradeoffs.
