PRO Modular Tool Storage Systems – 2026 Update

Milwaukee Packout Wall Storage and Workbench in Conex Box

There are an increasing number of pro-focused modular tool box and storage systems.

Here’s a quick summary of how things are looking so far at the start of 2026.

Bosch L-Boxx Contractor Tool Box Professional 3pc Combo Set

Bosch L-Boxx – The L-Boxx system has been stale for a while, aside for recent adoption by Tekton. A new L-Boxx Contractor system is launching this year in the USA, starting with a 3pc tool box combo.

Dewalt ToughSystem DXL Rolling Cart and Workktop with Smaller Tool Boxes

Dewalt ToughSystem – Dewalt added large-format DXL components to the system a year and a half ago. The core system remains well-featured at a lower price point, but lacks a lot of the expansion options offered by competing systems.

Aside from the large DXL workstation components, Dewalt last expanded the ToughSystem modular tool box system around 3 years ago.

Dewalt TStak Tool Box and Organizer Closed

Dewalt Tstak – Dewalt has not expanded their compact tool box and organizer system in many years, but users can find some additional options in the Craftsman VersaStack line.

Flex Stack Pack Roller Tool Box with Attached Tool Tote

Flex Stack Pack – Flex last expanded its Stack Pack tool box line around a year and a half ago, with a rolling drawer tool box. It is unclear whether the tool storage line is still in development – it seems Flex barely paid any attention to the storage system since their last major expansion in 2023.

Klein Tools ModBox Gen2 Tool Box Tower Features

Klein Mod Box – Klein’s latest Mod Box expansion features a rework of their core tool boxes. We’ve seen additions to the line at a steady pace since its launch, including some components with unique functionality for electricians.

Further changes or additions might be forthcoming, pending the results of patent infringement legal complaints made against the company.

Hilti ProKit Tool Box System 2025

Hilti ProKit – Hilti launched their ProKit modular tool storage system just a few months ago. They could not provide any official details yet, but we expect for the first expansion to take place later this year.

ProKit hinged-lid tool boxes offer an improved user experience compared to most other designs.

Makita MakPac Battery Charging Tool Box

Makita MakPac – There have not been many additions to this Systainer-compatible line of tool cases. New Makita power tool battery charging cases are launching later this year.

Makita MakTrak Accessory Expansion 2206

Makita MakTrak – Makita launched its MakTrak line of tool boxes and organizers last year, with its larger format focused on transportability and ease of access. With the system so new, it is fair to expect that expansion products are currently under development.

Milwaukee Packout Crate Tool Box Expansion 2026 Collection

Milwaukee Packout – Milwaukee Packout is still the largest and most actively-expanding line of modular tool storage products, with multiple launches already announced for 2026.

I have bought into numerous tool storage systems over the years and have since moved to Milwaukee Packout for its organizers, drawer tool boxes, mobility options, accessories, and unique offerings.

In my opinion, Packout continues to be the best and most versatile modular tool and part storage system, and it looks like that won’t be changing anytime soon.

Ridgid XL Tool Box and 3-Drawer Tool Box on Rolling Carts

Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 – Ridgid last expanded the Pro Gear 2.0 modular storage system around 2 years ago, adding more drawer tool box options to their Home Depot-exclusive lineup.

There are some unique aspects to Ridgid’s approach that offer improved versatility, but development seems to have come to a standstill.

ToughBuilt StackTech Tool Storage System Product Family Teaser

ToughBuilt StackTech – ToughBuilt has not expanded their StackTech line of tool storage products in the USA in several years, but availability seems to be growing internationally.

At first glance the latching mechanism on the Tekton is quite different from Bosch. The former seems to be more unique with the laches are on the side only and the handles are at the bottom of the boxes. The later seems quite different.

Tekton uses original L-Boxx components, in red.

Yes, I have mainly old Bosch L-boxxes and added a red Tekton to it as a first aid box.
The Bosch/Sortimo proper first aid box was much more expesive.

I view that sort of “I want to have the branded accessory as opposed to a generic accessory” impulse as subject to a brand-consistency tax. There are a ton of examples by Milwaukee because some people really like having the same brand name on every little thing, even though another brand may be cheaper and/or better.

To add to Stewart’s comment, the new generation of L-Boxxes are referred to as G4. Not because it is the fourth generation but because the default color is now gray (or “coolgrey” as they refer to it in the marketing materials — though I think they all look black).

Tekton’s L-Boxxes (and their inset bins, which are color coded based on size in the first generation but are all black in the second generation) are first generation L-Boxxes. I don’t think there was ever a specific term for them (like Tanos has with Systainer Classic) but “classic L-Boxx” versus “G4 L-Boxx” makes sense to me.

My L-Boxxes are all classic and there appear to be pros and cons between the generations.

Will anyone who finds/discovers any components of the HUSKY “Build-Out” system please notify the nearest University Archeological Department. It would be the “find” of the decade!

I was about to buy into Husky Build-Out and then all the components I wanted were out of stock. Most of them never seemed to come back into stock. Ended up going with Milwaukee. Originally I was thinking it was out of my price range, then the sales before Christmas hit and got a 4 part rolling stack. $150 off. Thought process was, who would still be around in 5 years +. So I went to Milwaukee.

Still (happily) surprised Connect stuck around but seems to have outlived BuildOut.

Wasn’t there a near identical Hart/Walmart box system as well? I wonder if Keter axed the production line.

AFAIR, only the Hart cantilever organizer resembled somewhat the Husky Connect system boxes.

It seems to be the best value for entry-level option — I actually went and got a second drawer unit, and have been debating on getting a couple more (maybe I won’t have to make the jump to Systainers, or work up a fully 3D-printed solution).

My local HD had TONS of it on clearance about a year ago. I looked at it a few times, but didn’t commit.
Weeks later there were maybe 10 or less of each of the 3 SKUs left. At prices that were damn near unimaginable. I dragged my feet but decided I wanted a few of the drawer units. If I recall they were about $19 each and the sorter bin was down to about $8 or so. But I waited too long and they were gone by the time I finally tried.
I’m surprised to see they aren’t even online anymore either. But to me they didnt make sense to compete in that store against the best of the best, as well as the other 3 or 4 in- store competitors.

Dunno if this helps, but up North here, Stanley Tools are releasing TSTAK compatible kits through Canadian Tire. So, there are entire drawer sets available for TSTAK, that are unavailable through any other source. Even contacting Stanley, they don’t claim these are TSTAK compatible.

But, there’s two Black-Chrome Socket Sets at Canadian Tire, 203 and 238 pieces respectively, that I have bought (on sale, but worth it.) and the main kit boxes they came in are 100% TSTAK. They even lock to my existing TSTAK boxes. So, if you’re in the North, you can actually also augment your TSTAK system with Stanley TSTAK boxes with tool kits in them. They just appear to be exclusive to Canadian Tire. I may look further into any other Stanley kits that are coming in TSTAK boxes from the Canadian stores as well. Seems Stanley doesn’t particularly like shipping these TSTAK boxes empty. (Not a complaint on my part. The kits I bought are really nice, and doubling the majority of the included tools, means easy access to both sides of a bolt or fastener.)

Which is weird, considering Stanley/SBD refuse to acknowledge the TSTAK features of either box in question. It’s a compatibility boon! It should be a major selling point SBD has for making these sales!

If I could trade all my Packout into Toughbuilt, I would. Their thinking and options surpass MW, especially when you consider the loaded carts that can roll into a pickup truck or van, the dark color scheme is a huge plus … but they have not shown a hint of slim / low height storage cases … and that is the central pillar of my setup. One stack of foamed Packouts, one with drawers and two stacks of parts and what not … in mostly heavily customized slim cases ( think 4-10 or more compartments per cup )

But anyhow. Regardless of the brand, it is either the cost of entry to get a big number of units … or the lack of variety that will be an obstacle.

I still am none the wiser why the ridigid baskets were discontinued. I was hoping to buy some more. One year. Two years. None to buy.

I’m not sure if this is unique to my local Lowe’s or if this a thing elsewhere too, but while they seem to have cleared out a lot of the Flex power tools they have a lot of Flex Stack Pack. I was there yesterday and Stack Pack was the most prominent modular storage in the tool storage area. They had just a little Klein, some Stacktech, and a whole bunch of Craftsman and Flex. The Stack Pack was all new inventory as well, not old dusty backstock.

I’d be happy if I could find another 20gal Craftsman stacking tote.

I’ve tried rigid, packout, Dewalt toughsystem, t-stack/versastack, DXL, Klein modbox, and toughbuilt.

I like the size of the double and large drawers with the klein, the constant upgrading of Packout, the price of the rigid, the new thoughts that toughbuilt brought and the latching of the drawers, and base of the dewalt tough system.

I ultimately went with Packout and have all drawers/cabinets. The biggest let down to me was their large rolling drawer unit. It couldn’t fit as much stuff in it as I thought so I’ve stuck with the regular two and three drawer units.

I really want a box drawer that can fit two circular saws in it with a thin drawer on top for blades and miscellaneous… Only the Klein rolling modbox can do that from what I’ve seen. Hopefully Milwaukee does the same thing instead of the dumb single drawer giant base rolling box that’s so big you lose efficiency and yet too small to fit things in a more compact manner so as to gain efficiency…

StackTech seemed like the only competitor who was positioned to take a run at Milwaukee dominance in this space. Too bad their financial hurtles undermined the effort. I hope they will resume development in the future.

I was looking at these at Lowes. While I was at HD, I was also looking at Makita and love their hinge system (open either side).

Basically, I’m looking for a locking storage of these for cleaning tools and their accessories. Their brand isn’t as obvious (Stacktech) as the red of Milwaukee, or teal of Makita shouting out at others to see. Plus the locking feature is nice. I too, wish Stacktech could see that non-flash black is ok (Milwaukee should offer it in the states, not just EU).

But cost wise, they are all expensive for storage.

I have Tstak and versastack mostly because they have the best deals and are a bit smaller, which is fine as I’m now just a DIYer. I’m looking at maybe adding some tough system as a base with the adpater for Tstak on top and moving the rest of my actual tool storage in my basement to these. I like the tough system base unit better so I will move to that with maybe one drawer unit, then Tstak above.

I’m also looking at a system for my son. He has Makita for his power tools but I think he would be better served with Pack out Klien or Rigid, maybe tough system. He is in college figuring out what he want s to do but did work as a low voltage tech for a year so he has quite a bit of tools, and it would be nice to keep them separate from mine.

I love my TSTAK boxes, I’ve put them through a lot of abuse and I think the size and price point is perfect. But my god I would love them to add a few new options into the mix. A big, bottom drawer or a front opening box would be excellent. In fact, that’s all I really need or care about. They don’t have to do the half-size/ammo can thing the other systems do because the two sizes of the lidded boxes are already sufficient for that, and they are cheap enough that you can drop 20$ on amazon and get a box for specific small tasks if need be. Just a big, bottom drawer, preferably no on wheels so I can stick it on the excellent dolly is all I hope for.
