I agree! The top looks like it would be right at home on a large work table. Well, a very large work table at least, as the chest is 16″ deep.

Not a bad deal. Downsides for me would be 1) shallow and 2) lack of one full length drawer

I don’t know if it is the way you wrote it, or if Sears is doing their normal screwup, as I looked at other models (ball bearing, griplatch, as well) and they were not 1/2 off.

The discount is on one particular model – black chassis, black drawers.
There are other 40″ combos on sale for slightly less than $700, but they have fewer drawers (19 vs 22), and are standard ball bearing and not of the Griplatch series.

Are there any general feelings about the Griplatch mechanism?
IIRC most users like it.
When I play with them at the store it seems like a clever design.

I have heard some complaints about the Griplatch mechanism, but the consensus is that it’s very secure.
Craftsman’s regular ball bearing drawers have a different type of drawer lock which is a hassle to engage and disengage. To alleviate this, on non-mobile setups I just keep the drawers open ajar just ahead of the lock.
Anyhow, if/when I’m ready to upgrade to a larger Craftsman tool storage unit, it will definitely be a Griplatch one.
