Soy-Gel – a Safer Paint & Urethane Remover

Franmar Chemicals’ Soy-Gel is a safer professional paint stripper that can be used to remove acrylics, urethanes, epoxies, and lead-based paints. Soy-Gel is non-caustic, non-toxic, safe to use outdoors as well as indoors, and cleans up easily with water.

I’ve heard of Soy-Gel before, but finally had a chance to examine its performance first-hand at a recent Woodworking Show. My main concern was the toxicity of this paint remover, and while some cautions must still be taken (gloves, goggles, etc), it appears to be far less harmful than conventional strippers.

It also appears that Soy-Gel really is as effective as claimed. We have a few pieces of equipment that we wish to clean up, so we will probably be giving Soy-Gel a try in upcomming weeks.

Previously we had been using methylene chloride based strippers, but that’s a very, very nasty chemical that I would like to avoid dealing with in the future.

Soy-Gel does not come cheap at $21 per quart and $65 per gallon, but this is easily overlooked (at least by us) because it is far safer to use than non-green products.

None of the product details single out oil-based paints in any way, so it should work.
