Spotlight Shifter AAA LED Flashlight

I have been carrying around a small Spotlight Shifter 1.0 for a couple of days now, and it’s a pretty decent light. There are a couple of things that a company can get right with single AAA LED flashlights, and many things that can be done wrong.

Luckily, the Shifter 1.0 is a good example of what you get when everything is done right.

The single AAA Shifter can deliver a maximum output of 80 lumens for up to 3 hours. It has three modes – max brightness, low (but usable) brightness, and a strobe mode. At the front is an adjustable reflector that focuses the beam from floodlight to spotlight and back.

Overall the Shifter 1.0 is rather simple-looking and unadorned, but for penlights that’s a good thing. A full review will be in the works, but thus far I’ve been quite pleased with its performance, durability, and reliability.

There are a couple of other Spotlight flashlights sitting around my test bench, and the more I use them, the more I like the brand.

The Shifter 1.0 is priced at around $25-$35, which is about right for a light of this class.

I have used the AAA mini light that looks very similar to that one from a website called http://www.ledshoppe.com the light is just off or on, no variable brightness, or multiple modes, but if bought direct from the website, they cost $5 each, which includes shipping, and occasionally, they are on sale cheaper than that. Also, the clip can be reversed, so that you can attach the light to the bill of a baseball cap, for a makeshift headlamp. Maybe you could compare one of those, with a light like above. I routinely carry two lights, a Fenix in my coat pocket, for when I need more light, and one of the cheapie ones in my jeans pocket, so if it is lost, no big deal. If someone borrows it, and loses it, no big deal. They work surprisingly well, for the price. Mine is 2 years old, and still works fine. Kind of surprising, for as cheap as it was, and that I let my 6 year old play with it.

I’m impressed with the FREE flashlights you can get with a purchase at (dare I say it?) Harbor Freight. They’re small, light, bright, work like a champ, and did I already mention, FREE!
