Packout Compact Tool Box not in stock. “Usually ships in 20-30 days.”
Stuart
True, but it’s on sale for $50 while the going price at other dealers (such as Home Depot) is $70.
If you don’t need it *right now*, $20 savings is 28.6% discount.
It originally launched at $60, and so the sale price still beats that by a bit.

The one time I tried to order from Toolnut, probably 4-5 years ago, they refused to accept my tax exemption, which is ridiculous.
Since then, nearly every single item I’ve checked their website for, says out of stock.
I’m convinced they don’t stock anything.
fred
As I recall ToolNut is sort of a family business located in an expanded storefront in Westchester County NY. Unless they have a separate warehouse elsewhere – they probably do have limited stock – and likely either have items drop-shipped from their suppliers or they trans-ship the item once they get it onto their loading dock.

Shane here, from Tool Nut.
Hey, Dave, sorry for the issues with your tax exemption. Please reach out to us at [email protected] and our team can get you set up, if you’re still interested. Apologies for the hiccup the last time you tried to get that done.
Obviously, during the past 2 years, supply chain issues have been a problem for manufacturers and retailers alike. We did admittedly struggle at times with inventory availability, some brands were worse than others. That said, I feel like we’re in a good stocking position now on most things.
We had a LOT of those PACKOUT boxes, but we blew through them over the past day or so. Consumers are so unpredictable, and I don’t envy the job of our Purchasing team who has to gaze into their crystal ball and guess how many widgets you guys are going to want. We didn’t limit the number people can buy and some guys were grabbing 3-5 of them at a time. It’s probable we’ll have them back in stock much sooner than the 20-30 days, but we try to be conservative with our estimates on the site.
Like Stuart said, hopefully some folks will see this as a deal good enough to wait. Thanks to all of the tradespeople out there, we appreciate you! And, thanks to Stuart for sharing our deals with the readers of Toolguyd.
Dave
Well that’s something you don’t see everyday. Appreciate you commenting on this directly. 👍🏻

Thanks for your response. To bad it’s so rare online.
Good on you.
All the best.

Tool Nut refuses to ship to Hawaii. ACME isn’t much better, I tried ordering a Dewalt drill/driver combo for $299 and they wanted $143 for shipping. I wrote to their customer service and they said they had to ship air to Hawaii (like they couldn’t ship ground – which is a lie) and they couldn’t/wouldn’t offer any other type of shipping (USPS). I guess they don’t want my business. I asked to be removed from their mailing list. I’ve bought lots of stuff from them in the past, but I won’t buy from them anymore.
Stuart
From what I’ve seen, many independent dealers won’t ship to Hawaii or Alaska. As I understand it, it’s a huge hassle since batteries count as hazardous materials and require special handling if shipped via air.
What do you mean it’s a lie? How do you ship ground to islands?
AL
USPS Ground. It’s slower but cheaper. Companies sometimes ignore this option because it’s more work than letting a UPS or FedEx driver sweep their dock.
USPS extends as many services as possible to all 50 states. Retailers don’t care as much because they’ll make more money selling to mainland customers.
It’s a little insulting when people treat AK and HI like foreign countries. But, it’s been happeneing forever.
Franck B.
Shipping to PR, GU and MP also have even more hurdles, despite USPS supporting them fully! And other US islands, I’m sure, of which I’ve no experience.
Dave
USPS “ground,” as you called it, is not cheaper than UPS or Fedex, if the company has sizable volume.
Many companies won’t use USPS because the pricing just isn’t competitive. Nor is the service.
Franck B.
Technically it’s called “surface” and it includes marine shipping, but most companies just use “ground” because more people relate to that.
There are other shipping companies besides USPS, UPS and FedEx, so surface shipping to Hawaii is possible. Of course, using something else becomes “a huge hassle” as you put it.
A friend of mine shipped her horse to Hawaii. No batteries, but they still wouldn’t put it on an airplane.
Dave
UPS ground and Fedex ground to Hawaii and Alaska ship ground to either Los Angelas or Seattle, respectively, then air the rest of the way.
The only true “ground” service to Hawaii is USPS Parcel Select, which would travel by truck to Los Angelas and then the rest of the way by boat.
Batteries, especially over 100 Wh, are indeed a huge hassle to ship air (legally).
Dave
Actually, the first part of my first sentence above is not always true.
UPS ground and Fedex ground don’t necessarily go to Los Angeles or Seattle first, but they absolutely travel by air for the 2nd leg of the trip, from wherever they departed the lower 48.
AL
I don’t know why it’s so confusing. It’s got the word ‘ground’ in it to define the class of service. People think it’s a joke to ask “how do ship on ground to Hawaii?”. Ha ha. Yup, never heard that ignorant joke before.
https://faq.usps.com/s/article/What-is-USPS-Retail-Ground-Service
Just to be clear, there aren’t any USPS mail planes carrying your air mail. They go in bags and bins and sent in contracted cargo space on passenger planes.
And Parcel Post can take packages that aren’t wrapped in paper and string.
V-mail postcards were never delivered to troops in WW2. They were photographed, transported as film, then reprinted in miniature on the other end. All the perfume and lipstick were a waste.
But, yes, there is still a mule train that is contracted to carry US mail to the Havasupai at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. By way of a giant freezer facility in Peach Springs to chill everything before hitting the trail. Because the ‘mail’ is mostly food and medication.
How do you get Amazon _Prime_ at the bottom of the Grand Canyon? How do you get _express_ prescriptions?
Same way as Ground shipments to Hawaii.
Stubbornness to treat people as equals, even if it costs you a little bit extra.
Amazon is not relabeling their boxes to Amazon Mule. You just try to do the best you can.
Some sellers don’t care enough to try.
Dave
It’s only confusing because you are confused.
Both UPS and Fedex “Ground” ship to Hawaii, via air. Meaning, no batteries allowed.
