I always enjoy seeing Toolguy’d posts about American made tools, frankly much more than any of other posting. Vaughan is a great brand, I own several products from that company.

Especially during the holiday portion of the year, it’s a very nice sight to see distributors and manufacturers alike producing/selling USA made items. Far too much ads on these electronic products that really no one really needs and cause people to spend more than they have.

The fact is, this is the busiest and most profitable time of year for retailers. But you’re not going to see many things like hammers and other general-purpose tools on sale. It’s about what retailers can sell a LOT of.

I was surprised to see these Vaughan framing hammers in the holiday tool section at the local Home Depot. It seems to me that sales were poor, which is why they’re now offering a 25% discount if you buy one online with in-store pickup. Home Depot wants to clear these tools out quicker, and getting you back in the store increases the chance you’ll buy something else that catches your eye.

Long story short, I am also glad to see USA-made items on sale for the holidays. But the bad news is that this extra 25% discount means Home Depot isn’t selling the hammers as quickly as they wanted to, which decreased the chance of similar staple tools being on sale next year. Home Depot will probably stick more with gimmicky and “special buy” tools that sell a lot quicker.

You sir, do bring up a valid point. I’ve been to my local Home Depot and in the times I’ve been there, I didn’t really see any sales on hammers though.

I imagine hammers are a hard sell as not a great deal of people need new hammers that often. Knowing Home Depot, I am all to aware of their gimmick laden special buy offers and trying to get you to buy something else.

Had a young woman try and rope my friend into buying a Bosch cordless drill and buy did she try to push this. Can’t fault her for trying to do her job, but it was rather annoying and he did not buy said drill, not that he needed one though.

Thanks for the advertisement though Stuart, I am sure some of the guys I know will jump on this once I let them know. I know there a large amount of talk about USA made products these days, but sales on them are even more rare it seems.

My thought is that if you were assembling a toolbox as a Christmas gift for someone (say a child or grandchild who was moving out) – it might include a 16 oz. claw hammer – but not a framing hammer

I was going to pick one up, but then I wondered how much I would have ended up using it.
