Back in 2017, Dewalt came out with a new line of heavy duty shelving. Since then, they have expanded their workshop lineup with a new bench-style seat, and two shop chairs. Shown here is the Dewalt adjustable shop stool with casters (DXSTAH025).
The other day Ben V posted Part 1 of his Journey to an Organized Workshop with Modular Tool Cabinets, and some of you asked about the chair. While I saw listings for these new Dewalt shop accessories some time ago, I was on the fence about a post. It’s definitely uniquely styled and should be perfectly functional, but I didn’t know how interested readers would be.

Dewalt’s rolling shop stool is made from some of the same materials as their 4-foot storage rack, and its heavy duty steel frame can support up to 300 lbs.
The stool has a pneumatic adjustment that can bring the seat height from 24″ to 28″. It comes with 360° swivel casters, and also glass-filled nylon feet if you prefer that option (you get both). There’s a wire shelf at the bottom for holding some tools and supplies.
If you can’t tell from the photo, the seat is cushioned and with a small back that I suppose serves as a backside stop. It’s covered with textured vinyl that Dewalt says can resist rips and tears. The Dewalt-yellow powder coat is said to be an industrial-grade finish that won’t chip or fade.
The stool comes pre-assembled, and is said to weigh 21 pounds.

There is also a non roller/non height adjustable version available, which makes the bottom tray much more accessible. I wouldn’t buy these personally but Dewalt’s storage racks are actually quite affordable vs other offerings with similar specs. Perhaps if these drop in price i would consider them, but imo they don’t have much edge other than the logo. Tool makers should consider making an office type chair designed to be used in a shop environment. Most shop guys I know that sit often (tig weldors, small parts work) bring in old office chairs, I bet an “tough” version of the classic office chair would fly off the shelf.

I have mixed feelings about the the Dewalt racks.
I was talking to the licensing partner rep at the media event, about whether the racks are packaged for shipping to stores, or to customers, and the said to stores.
A few months ago, a delivery driver was unloading a Dewalt storage rack. “Uh-oh,” I thought. I didn’t request a sample. “Oh, no!” was my next thought, as I watched the driver start taping one end of the box together. He then brought it up the neighbor’s drive. A few days later, it was out on their step waiting for pickup. We talked about a few weeks later, and it turns out that hardware and parts were missing from the box. Stuff like that are always risky when shipped to home. Due to their size, weight, and how they’re packaged, damage is possible.
There are chairs designed for lab and industrial settings use, but not specifically workshops.

Funny how shipping/packaging has become a major “quality control” point of failure. I wouldn’t doubt packaging and shipping problems rival manufacturing defects in terms of returns these days. I was mainly speaking about value in terms of quality/specs vs other racks, but your experience brings to light the impact bad post manufacturing practices can have on a product and brand. Two returns in a row for shipping problems can not only be a huge frustration and time waster, but leaves a lasting bad impression of said brand/online outlet. Some names in particular come to mind with missing and incorrect hardware problems, but i’m sure it’s common with items that contain a large number and variety of said hardware (I’ve actually never had a missing piece of hardware from any harbor freight product i’ve purchased, most of which contain high fastener counts – go figure!)

For what it’s worth, I bought 2 of the 4ft units from Home Depot in Nov or Dec last year. I had them shipped to the store so I could inspect before I took them home. Thankfully the boxes were fine, contents were mostly fine. There were some plastic covers for the cross supports that were inexplicably broken, probably because they were too brittle to begin with. Since they served no functional purpose, I let it be. All other parts were accounted for and they work great. A “light duty” version of industrial shelving which should satisfy most homeowners.
I thought about the chair, but it would mostly get in the way since I mostly stand in the shop. What I need is a folding chair 28” high so I can get it out of the way when I don’t need it.

We’ve bought countless used (sometimes barely) Herman Miller and Steelcase very high end both low and drafting height chairs from local venders in cities from Detroit to Seattle.
I’m very partial to 10% of list price.

Craig. Over the years most of our go to places have been torn down by either Vulcan or Amazon.
So recently we’ve kept our buying to Portland.
But I bet someone still exists nearer SoDo. (Does that date me?).

LOL, the seat and stem look exactly the same as a Costco stool I bought a while back.
I question the usefulness of the wire shelve as most small tools would fall through. I do like the colors though.

Exceptional dewalt racks .light duty?? 1500 lbs per shelf..very easy to assemble and take apart or adjust hieght.
..the racks also have peg board available for the sides and back and full length drawers .
…the bench seat works great for taking boots off at the end of the day. The stools are high quality and roll easy.
…for the money ,no better racks are available. For the two dewalt guys in here ,I highly recommend the system. And I quess all the other Red guys will wait .

Sorry… Canadian Dialect issue… Umm… Is it safe to say it FITS with the DeWALT Shelving components? Like… say… using a short crossbeam or two on the legs to build a back, or onboard tool storage platform? (Literally a platform. Put a toolbox on a shelf that is bolted into the stool kind of platform.)

Yes both stools are made out of the same vertical posts of the shelving units.,also the bench seat…the wire rack on the bottom of the stool is the same as the shelf…. But. You can order the racks with composite shelf’s as I did…items on the shelf slide easier.
……the racks,seats,bench, drawer units and pegboard are All…very very durable….very easy to set up and take down….just cut a piece of material to sit on the wire under the seat to hold items….

Ive been using that stuff for more than 2 decades, it has moved with me between garages. It is quite durable and has never had a problem with weight, even when I had small block engines sitting on the rack.
If it is the same OEM, then I have no problems recommending either the dewalt chair or the dewalt racking. I certianly agree that ordering online vs pickup in a store can be very challenging. Even in-store, the steel safety ties were often missing.

One of the biggest flaw I see in the chair, is the lip on the back of the seat. That will make it harder/more uncomfortable for my kids to use it as a simulator for flying like Superman across the garage floor.
