In a general sense, Milwaukee’s magnetic tape measure is their flagship model, and the contractor tape measure is a slightly less expensive version. But the difference is not just about cost.
The newer contractor tape has a much more stable base, but it lacks the finger-brake. It also has a smaller – but still large – non-magnetic hook. And on the bottom of the tape, there’s nothing, while the magnetic tape measure has markings on both sides of the tape – horizontally oriented on the top, vertically on the bottom.
You could think of the contractor tape measure as having less bells and whistles, but it also has a completely different feel to it. I have both magnetic and contractor tapes in front of me right now, and couldn’t tell you which I prefer. The magnetic tape is better for hand-holding and when you need a magnetic hook, the contractor version is better when you need to rest it on a surface.
So with this double pack, you get the best of both worlds. At one point, I paid $25 for my first 25-foot Milwaukee tape measure. Since then there have been period deals where you could buy the 25-foot tape and get the 16-foot tape for free. This deal replaces that, and seems to be better since you get two 25-foot tapes.

Everybody should try to inspect these in person at Home Depot before buying. I’m a huge Milwaukee fan but just can’t come around to the tapes. I tried and tried to like the magnetic version in my metalworking shop but its just too bulky and looks to solve problems that don’t exist; the hook is TOO big, the magnet collects chips, throwing off measurements if you’re not careful, and the lines just don’t appear “crisp” to me on either the mag or contractor tape.
It’s been reduced to my spare tape but I find myself trying to avoid it at all costs.
However tapes are HUGE personal preference so no one is right or wrong, but check ’em out before it sits on your workbench collecting abrasive dust as mine does!

@ first I thought they were the best tape measures ever. I was pulling measurements from bar joists to floor standing on the floor only. I liked them so much I got backups. But after awhile the magnets come out and the plastic holding them break of. The lock becomes loose. I cannot recommend them.
