Deal of the Day: Panasonic Eneloop Rechargeable Batteries and Charger

Panasonic Eneloop Colored Rechargeable Batteries and Charger

Over at Amazon, this Eneloop rechargeable battery starter pack is on sale, today only, 05/16/2016.

First things first, let’s talk about Eneloop a bit. Initially under Sanyo branding and now under Panasonic, Eneloop batteries are pre-charged and slow self-discharging rechargeable batteries. In other words, they’re fully charged right out of the package, and unlike older NiMH cells, they won’t self-drain when sitting in a shelf waiting to be used.

These batteries provide certain advantages to disposable alkaline batteries, and not just in how they can be recharged many times. It’s not just about cost economics. They can handle higher current loads than alkaline batteries, resulting in better performance and runtime with certain devices.

Take high powered flashlights as an example. You could power them with alkaline batteries, but you’ll get better performance at the highest brightness outputs with Eneloops. The same might be true for other rechargeable battery brands, but I couldn’t tell you. Eneloop has been my preferred brand for quite a few years now.

Eneloops are another example of awesome convenient everyday tools.

Alternatively, Lithium battery cells are also a good choice for high drain devices, but rechargeables still make sense for heavy and frequent use.

So back to this deal.

You get a 4-position charger, (10) AA batteries, and (4) AAA batteries. The batteries are colored, which I guess could come in handy for swapping out batteries on the go.

Sale Price: $26
Regular Price: ~$33

Buy Now(via Amazon)

This seems like a great deal! It’s almost got me convinced that I need more batteries and an extra charger.

Deal ends at 3am 5/17/2016 unless supplies run out sooner.

How well do these tolerate disuse? I’ve killed a bunch of NiMH cells by having them sit. Even if I discharge and recharge them a few times a year they don’t survive very long.

Very, very well. That’s what the low self-discharge is about. According to the product page, these cells:

Maintain up to 70% of their charge after 5 years (when not it use).

I love these batteries. I own about 50 of them. I used them for professional photography in the past and not they power all of my kids toys. I’m waiting for the high performance versions to go on sale.

The high performance ones almost never go on sale. I think I caught them on sale in November 2014. Bought more last holiday season at full price.

Finally pulled the plug on an Eneloop kit. I’ll have to get some more AAA batteries
for all the kids toys. So far regular AAAs have lasted since Christmas so we’ll see how long they go for.

Note also that this is an excellent charger. Most bundled chargers charge the batteries as pairs, which is fine if they both have identical charges and capacities, but that is very seldom the case, especially if you are using the batteries in groups of 3. This charger monitors every battery individually.

I love LSD batteries generally and Eneloops specifically. Use them exactly as you would alkalines… except that you recharge them when they finally run out. They can sit in your remote for a year without a problem. Great technology!

After I bought a Sanyo branded set of Eneloops at Costco several years ago, I read an article (not here) indicating that the charger charges the batteries in pairs, and that when one battery reached full charge, the charging process would stop, leaving the second battery at less than full capacity. As a result, I chose to use the batteries only in multiples of two, so that both batteries in a charging pair would have been equally discharged before hand. This lead to continue using disposables in my 3-AAA-powered flashlight.

According to the Amazon product page, the charger included in this kit supports individual battery charging. For anyone with a charger like mine, I think this is reason enough to buy.
