Price Drop: Stanley QuickSlide Knife (V2) for $5

New Stanley QuickSlide Utility Knife STHT10828

Over at Amazon, the new Stanley QuickSlide utility knife was introduced at a price of about $11. Now, it’s dropped to $5, but has “add-on” item status, which means it can only be purchased as part of a larger order, even for Prime members.

At just $5, when ordered with at least $25 of other shipped-by-Amazon items, the new QuickSlide knife is a much better bargain.

When I found out about this knife, I ordered a second original QuickSlide. I just don’t think the new version is an improvement over the original, Instead, it looks like a completely different model with different appeal.

Compared to the original QuickSlide, the new version looks smaller, lighter, and more compact. Plus, the built-in carabiner makes this a great strap-to-your bag knife.

Note: I believe that this could be a permanent price drop, but it’s possible that it’s only a temporary price reduction. Other sellers still offer it for $10+.

Update: Thanks to readers’ comments, we now know that Home Depot and other retailers are offering the V2 (or V3?) QuickSlide for $5 as well.

I thought that Amazon would be putting more items into their “Add-On” program just to make some of their prices seem more competitive. I’ve noticed over the last year or so that they are pricing many small items with what seems like “shipping cost built into the price” . (Of course, like “free lunch” – we knew that there was no such thing as “free” shipping) This make me feel a bit less satisfied with my Prime membership – and also makes me look at other sources of supply – often through Amazon’s “other buying options”. What I’m finding more and more is that the “other buying choices” listed on Amazon are competitive if you are buying 1 item – but often cheaper if you buy 2 or more items from the same vendor – where the aggregated shipping costs are less than the sum of the single item shipping costs. I still like buying through Amazon because of their customer service and how they help with disputes with third party vendors.

Here in the UK the add on program only requires a £10 purchase to get free delivery, but everything costs more here anyway. I haven’t seen one of these new quick slides yet, I don’t know if they are even available here yet.

Both Walmart and Home Depot have them for 4.97 + tax. The only thing I dont like about it is the bottle opener will catch your hand when you take it out of your pocket.

I have this version of their quickslide
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001EVK33S/ref=pd_aw_sims_7?pi=SS115&simLd=1

I love the thing. Fits nicely in my pocket. Does some tough jobs too. The only down side is that I can sometimes retract when I don’t want it to.

My gripe with a lot of these sliding type of knifes. How hard can it be to implement a locking mechanism button?

It maybe technically a box cutter but I have used these types to find leaks in the walls where you have to cut a lot of holes on the dry wall to find the leak…..using this type of knife with enough force will give you a very clean cut that would allow you to put back the same drywall peace you cut with little effort..less mudding, less texturing, saving money…no drywall dust…

Sometimes I have to cut up to 4 holes to find a leak in a wall, annoys me that when I put a good amount of pressure I press the button and the blade retracts…lol…

Looking at it, the first thing it needs it a shot of Safety Orange, although Neon Green or Banana Yellow would work nicely. The first thing I look for in a utility knife is “will the blade(s) try to sneak out and cut me”, a problem with cheap knockoffs of the classic utility knife that store extra blades in the handle. That doesn’t look like a problem with this knife.

The second thing I look for is looking for. Utility knives are like bad cats. Always in the way and slicing things up when you don’t want them to, and impossible to find when you need ’em. So I like mine bright and easy to see.

Don’t waste your money on this one. I bought one of these because of the carabiner, so I can hook it onto the outside of my tool pouch, where I can always find it.
I’ll be throwing it away or returning it though, this thing is just too dangerous, as the blade pops out of the holder during even light use.
I tried re-tensioning the clip that holds the blade in place, but it is very flimsy and just not up to the job. I’ll be putting a lanyard & carabiner on one of my other shop knives instead.
